How This YouTube Thumbnail Downloader Works
Paste a video link and this tool checks every thumbnail file YouTube's CDN actually has for that video — it doesn't assume a resolution exists just because most videos have it. Each size is verified live, right before you download it.
1Step 1
Copy the Video Link
On YouTube, open the video and copy the URL from the address bar — watch, youtu.be, or Shorts links all work.
2Step 2
Paste It Above
Paste it into the box at the top of this page and click Get Thumbnails.
3Step 3
Download the Size You Want
See every resolution this video actually has, with real pixel dimensions, and download the one you need.
Available Resolutions Explained
Every YouTube video's thumbnail lives at a handful of fixed file names on YouTube's CDN — maxresdefault.jpg, sddefault.jpg, hqdefault.jpg, mqdefault.jpg, and default.jpg, plus a sixth, oardefault.jpg, that only exists for YouTube Shorts, at their real 9:16 vertical aspect ratio. This YouTube thumbnail downloader checks each file for the specific video you paste in and only offers a download for the sizes that actually respond with an image, drawn below at their real relative scale. We label them by size (Max, Large, Medium, Small, Tiny) rather than YouTube's own file names, because those names are misleading on their own — sddefault.jpg is actually 640×480, larger than hqdefault.jpg at 480×360:
| Label | Typical size | Available on |
|---|---|---|
Maxmaxresdefault.jpg | 1280×720 | Videos with a custom or auto-generated cover |
Largesddefault.jpg | 640×480 | Most videos, but not all |
Mediumhqdefault.jpg | 480×360 | Nearly every video, including the oldest ones |
Smallmqdefault.jpg | 320×180 | Nearly every video |
Tinydefault.jpg | 120×90 | Every video |
Verticaloardefault.jpg | 1080×1920 | Shorts only |
A video's available sizes aren't a simple ladder where a lower resolution is always available if a higher one is. We've seen real videos where sddefault.jpg is missing but hqdefault.jpg works fine — so this tool checks every size independently instead of assuming.
One more thing worth knowing: Large, Medium, and Tiny are traditionally 4:3 canvases. Since almost every video today is filmed in 16:9, YouTube fits the widescreen picture into that narrower canvas by adding black bars above and below it — so a 640×480 Large file for a typical video is really a 640×360 picture sitting inside a taller frame. Max and Small are already 16:9 and don't have this issue. We list the file's real pixel dimensions, not the visible picture size, because that's what the file you download actually contains.
Planning a thumbnail rather than downloading one? Our guide to YouTube thumbnail size covers the official upload spec — now 3840×2160 — next to the sizes YouTube actually serves.
Why Some Videos Don't Have a 4K Thumbnail
A Max thumbnail only exists if the creator uploaded a custom cover image, or if YouTube generated one automatically for a recent upload. Older videos, uploaded before high-resolution custom covers existed, often only have the smaller Medium or Small files — there was never a Max file to begin with, and no amount of retrying will make one appear. Some thumbnail tools assume the Max file always exists and simply fail or show a blank image when it doesn't; this YouTube thumbnail downloader checks first and tells you what's actually there.

Has a custom cover
maxresdefault.jpg → HTTP 200, 1280×720
The creator (or YouTube, for a recent upload) provided a high-resolution cover image.

No custom cover (2005 upload)
maxresdefault.jpg → HTTP 404 · hqdefault.jpg → HTTP 200, 480×360
One of the first videos ever uploaded to YouTube, from before high-resolution covers existed. The Max file simply was never created.
What This YouTube Thumbnail Downloader Does Not Do
To keep every number on this page honest, there are a few things we deliberately don't do:
Accept a bare 11-character video ID
We checked how other thumbnail tools handle input, and none of the ones we tested accept a bare ID either — paste the full video link instead.
Download thumbnails for multiple videos at once
This tool checks one video per search. Batch downloading is a different kind of tool with different tradeoffs.
Upscale a thumbnail or use AI to add detail that isn’t there
Every resolution shown is a real file YouTube serves for this video — we don’t generate pixels that don’t exist.
Add a watermark, crop, or otherwise edit the image
You get the file exactly as YouTube’s CDN serves it. Editing it is up to you, after you download it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the official YouTube thumbnail downloader?
No. YouTube does not publish an official thumbnail downloader, and this site is not affiliated with YouTube or Google. We read the same CDN files anyone’s browser loads when it shows a video’s thumbnail, and report what those files actually return.
Why does the resolution list change from video to video?
Because we check each resolution file for that specific video instead of assuming a fixed list. A video only has a Max (1280×720) file if the creator uploaded a custom cover, or if the video is recent enough for YouTube to generate one automatically — older uploads often only have the smaller Medium or Small files.
Why do the Large, Medium, and Tiny files have black bars?
Those three files use a 4:3 canvas left over from before YouTube switched to widescreen. Since almost every video today is filmed in 16:9, YouTube fits the wider picture into that narrower canvas and fills the leftover space with black bars above and below. Max and Small are already 16:9 and don’t have this issue.
Does the downloaded image match what the creator originally uploaded?
We can only confirm it matches the file YouTube’s CDN currently serves at that resolution — we have no way to verify whether YouTube re-compresses images after upload, so we don’t claim the file is byte-identical to the original.
Does this work for YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Shorts thumbnails live at the same CDN paths as regular videos, and most Shorts also have a Vertical file at their real 9:16 aspect ratio — something regular landscape videos don’t have.
Can I download a thumbnail from just the video ID, without the full link?
Not yet — paste the full video link (a watch, youtu.be, or Shorts URL). We checked how other thumbnail tools handle a bare video ID and found none of them support it either, so this isn’t a gap we’re rushing to fill.
Can I download thumbnails for multiple videos at once?
No, this tool checks one video at a time. Batch downloading is a different kind of tool with different tradeoffs, and we’d rather keep this one simple and accurate than bolt on a feature we haven’t tested.
Is it legal to download a YouTube thumbnail?
The thumbnail files this tool reads are served from YouTube’s own public CDN — the exact same files your browser loads whenever you view a video page, with no login or access control involved. What you do with a downloaded image afterward (reposting, editing, commercial use) is subject to YouTube’s Terms of Service and the original creator’s copyright, which this tool has no way to check for you. All images remain the property of their respective copyright owners. Please only download and use content where you have permission or where your use is otherwise permitted by applicable law.
